As a hub of innovation and education, over 11 colleges and universities are located in the Central Massachusetts area, including nine within the city boundaries, bringing over 35,000 students to the area. In 2016, Worcester-area colleges awarded over 400 life sciences-related degrees. Since 2007, the Commonwealth has seen a 40% increase in its R&D workforce and continues to increase each year, bringing new intellectual capital and resources to potential employers.
With its diverse educational offerings, from community college level courses at Quinsigamond Community College to graduate level degrees at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester’s workforce can bring a mix of PhD-level positions as well as entry-level positions to employers. Worcester’s knowledge-based economy has been a catalyst for a number of research clusters, including Gateway Park, the UMass Medicine Science Park, and the Biomanufacturing Education and Training Center (BETC) at WPI.
The BETC at WPI is the first of its kind in New England. The 10,000 square foot facility allows for innovative partnerships between academia and industry. With access to these types of advanced programs, companies at the Reactory will be able to utilize the BETC and customize workforce development solutions that fit their individual needs.
